Coffee with Adam

Creation of Adam

by Derrick Koome

When God was creating man He took some soil from the ground and moulded him into His own image. He then breathed into him and voila! man came to be. But God in His infinite wisdom saw that it was not good that man should be alone. He saw it wise to make him a helper. So He sent man into a deep sleep, took one of his ribs, closed up his flesh and forthwith fashioned the woman. In summary, it appears that the first man was made from mud and the first woman was made from the rib of a rational creature. Any lessons learnt from this story? When this questioned was posed in a marriage seminar, one man shot his hand up and replied, “Yes I have learnt one important lesson. It explains why I get treated like dirt.”

So as the story goes, Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden where they enjoyed dominion over all that God had created. Unfortunately, they were banished from the Garden because they had partaken of the forbidden fruit. Years later Adam and Eve had several children. One day Adam took his sons to work as fathers are wont to do with their sons. As they were digging the ground in heat of the mid-day sun the sons broke the ice with a rather interesting conversation. Curiosity had gotten the better of them. They wanted their father to give them a blow-by-blow account of what really happened on the day they were banished from the Garden of Eden. Adam was a bit reluctant but he budged when the sons persisted. He looked to his right and then looked to his left and then told the little rascals, “Okay guys here’s the deal. Your mother ate us out of the Garden of Eden.”

Now make no mistake about it, Adam was very hardworking so much so that he used to come home late at night. On several occasions he ate late dinner and his wife Eve became a little concerned and suspicious. So she accosted Adam with some serious allegations. “Adam! I think you’re cheating on me.” “That’s ridiculous! You’re the only woman in the world,” Adam replied in disbelief. After that reassurance Eve relaxed a bit and they later went to sleep peacefully. In the middle of the night Adam was woken by some poking on his chest. It was Eve. “What on earth are you doing woman!” Adam demanded. “Counting your ribs”, Eve answered.

Adam had many descendants and some of them were real characters. Noah was particularly a very sharp descendant of Adam. He was a great investor and probably the greatest investor in the Bible. So sharp was he that while he was floating stock everyone else was in liquidation. That was not the only thing. You might wonder how light used to reach the lower decks in the ark given that there were several decks but only the uppermost deck had some windows to let light through. Noah was a genius. He used flood lights on the lower decks. In the forty days that Noah, his family and all the animals spent in the ark, there was no shortage of drama. Without disclosing the source since he is not authorized to speak on behalf of Noah, word is that Noah was forced to punish and discipline the chickens because they were using ‘fowl’ language.

Fast forward to the 21st century where the descendants of Adam are now 7 billion strong. The creation story is being repeated in every kindergarten across the face of the earth. It is important that all children learn of their beginnings and stay connected to their roots. One such child is called Denis Pascoe. He is particularly fascinated when the teacher explains to them how Eve was created out of one of Adam’s ribs. Later in the week he develops a pain in his chest area and to ease the pain he lies on the sofa as if he were ill. His mother passes by and asks, “Denis! Are you okay? What’s the matter son?” Denis responds, “Mom I have a pain in my chest. I think I’m going to have a wife.”

In the spirit of staying connected to his roots, another kid Anthony, is leafing through the pages of the old testament. As he is doing so something falls out. He bends down to pick it up and realizes that it is an old leaf that had been crisply pressed flat between the pages. In the spur of the moment, due to excitement, he calls out his mum to come and see the object of his excitement. “What have you got there dear?” His mom asked. Anthony answered, “I think its Adams underwear!”
